Normally Central Admin should live on one of your App servers but it technically can run on any server you choose. It really depends how large your farm is. If you are only installing a single server then yes your CA would be on your WFE. To be a WFE you can stop all services on that server except for Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web application. Normal you should also run the workflow timer service on your WFE or it can cause issues. I hope that helps.
ReplyDeleteHere are some technet docs that might help.

I would recommend you go back to the requirement and ask what is the purpose of adding a WFE Server - Like Patrick said you don't need Central Admin Application installed on all Servers in the farm. Do you want to Add Server to the farm for load balance, or do you want to isolate a heavy utilized service and run it on a dedicated server?
ReplyDelete1. I would recommend to run CA on more than one server with load balancing and SSL.
ReplyDeleteThat is because, if the server hosting CA is down, you have to provision CA on a different server, which takes time and is not guaranteed to be 100% successful (theoretically is fast and easy, but life is life).
This configuration requires some effort.
If you don't use this configuration you don't need to provision CA on added WFE.
2. CA does not have to run on all WFE.
3. WFE can run Distributed Cache (you need this) and Request Management (if you deploy it, which is different story).
Make sure you ADD the server to an existing farm during installation.
ReplyDeleteThe term WFE server is depricated. You probably need more power. Just install SP2013 on a server and rearange services so you get enough power in your farm. But first check if you can't upscale one or more existing servers and downgrade less important services,
ReplyDeleteThis link will guide you with adding additional server to your Farm. Either WFE or APP.
